Mental Health
Students, staff, and families are under tremendous stress. I am hearing so many personal stories of mental health concerns amongst our students and staff. The pandemic has affected everyone differently and we know that this is a time when we all need support.
Currently, only some schools have counsellors. There is an URGENT need for counselling support in ALL schools and for additional education for all staff and students on how to support each other’s mental health.
It is part of the School Act that one of the Board responsibilities is to “ensure that each student enrolled in a school operated by the board and each staff member employed by the board is provided a welcoming, caring, respectful and safe learning environment that respects diversity and fosters a sense of belonging.”
My view is that being in school should feel comfortable, like a warm hug.
As Trustee I will continue to elevate the importance of mental health and wellness in all initiatives, including our strategic plan, curriculum and division policies, and work towards measures to understand our progress.
